the urge to feel

Do you ever touch something that you know you’re not actually supposed to?

I was brought up by a mother who had to keep telling me: ‘You look with your eyes, Lisette. Not with your hands.’ In other words: keep your hands off everything.

But I do want to. I usually do feel that urge to feel. Because some materials spark my curiosity. Because I want to hold onto the shape for a moment. Just to feel it for a moment.

Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why I work with textiles. At least, that’s how it feels. And that’s fine too.

In fact, do go ahead and touch it. Because, for me, touch isn’t just an added bonus to the work.
It *is* part of the job.
