not perfection
I am a textile artist and, in my work, I seek energy. I seek emotion. Faces fascinate me, but in order to capture the emotion in a face effectively, I wanted to learn to read them even better.
When drawing in pencil, I kept losing sight of my aim (understanding what a face conveys) and soon found myself striving for perfection in the portrait itself.
So I started scratching. Call it anti-perfection. With a fine line, searching for the right movement, for light and dark, shadow and contrast. For those tiny movements.
And that’s how my scribbles came about.
a way of looking at things
Scribbles became my way of really exploring faces.
When a pencil is allowed to move freely, there is room for chance and chaos. It was precisely this that enabled me to see more clearly: where a smile begins, how a gaze changes, where tension lies in a face, and how little is sometimes needed to convey emotion.
I incorporate what I learn there into my textile portraits. I translate those observations into colour, light, dark and the division of planes. My scribbles are therefore not separate from my textile work; they have become part of it.
Whereas I once started out using found images, I now create my own reference photographs. By using AI, I can not only decide for myself which perspective and which emotion I want to explore, but I can also create my own image and narrative for this purpose.

Still, at one point I took them down from my website and social media. But they never really disappeared…
Requests kept coming in for a piece that someone had once seen, as well as for personal portraits. Over the past few years, I have created several of them on commission.
What began as a technique – an exploration of how to see – became a series and literally took on a face.
I can now say that they form part of my process.
And that’s why I’m letting them come back just this once.
I have selected six works which, taken together, form a unique and diverse collection. Ranging from intense and contemplative to light-hearted and quirky.
