Club originated in the same research phase as Wonderings, in which I explored ways of gaining a firm grasp on the organic movement of thread. Whereas I previously worked on building up an image using small units and ‘pixels’ of thread, in this work I have shifted my focus to knots: a more direct, physical way of capturing structure and tension in the material.

The work is composed of various types of coarse threads, such as rope, thick textile yarn and scrap materials, each of which brings its own resistance, rhythm and character. By transforming these materials into knots and securing them in organic, almost organic structures, an image emerges that strikes a balance between control and chance.

Here, the knot becomes both an action and a language: a way of securing, but also of connecting, repeating and allowing patterns to emerge. Through repetition, the meaning shifts — from a single knot to rhythm, from structure to image.

The entire piece has been sewn onto unbleached cotton, stitch by stitch, and mounted in a wooden frame measuring 44 × 44 cm. This lends the work a quiet, almost object-like presence in which the tactility and texture of the material take centre stage.

Knots is a standalone, one-off work, born out of an exploration of tension, control and the beauty of repetition.
